Chapter 22 Questions

1. One big major issue in the nation after the civil ware was the issue of integrating freed blacks into society. Slavery had officially ended, but racism and segregation continued. Because of this, the southern economy (mainly agriculture based) needed a new cheap labor force. The nation was now united geographically, but needed a way to unite the people. The south held hatred towards the north for having ravished the north. In the north, republicans wanted to punish the south for ever having broken away from the nation. One other main concern was rebuilding infrastructure in the south as most of the south had been obliterated by the war. Reconstruction meant to address how the eleven seceding states would regain self-government and be reseated in Congress, the civil status of the former leaders of the Confederacy, and the constitutional and legal status of freedmen, especially their civil rights and whether they should be given the right to vote. Through these goals, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments would be passed and recognized as the fruits of the reconstruction era of US History.

2. Freed blacks were uncertain if the rumors of emancipation were true. Once confirmed, most blacks celebrated as they could now go wherever and whenever at their pleasure. They were no longer forced to work for white slave owners. Many changed their names from names given to them by the white masters. Many went to the Freedmen’ bureau to gain aid in becoming educated and finding jobs. Most blacks were unsure of where to go. Some joined the union and pillaged their masters’ property. Others stayed and worked for their old master. This created a system of sharecropping which, in the end, was almost as unfair as being a slave. Many whites, especially in the south, were angered by the end of slavery because the south now needed a new cheap labor force.
