“The Breakfast Club”, is a movie about five high school students, who are forced to spend a Saturday in detention. All five students were not friends and had nothing in common with each other. The five students were, Andrew a school jock, Brian a nerd, John an outcast, Claire a popular girl, and Allison a loner. At the beginning of the day they wanted nothing to do with each other, but as the day progressed they found that they all had a lot in common.

This group of students was formed by each student getting in trouble and having to spend a Saturday in detention. Being that the students were all very different, the group had to overcome a lot of primary tension. For example, when John says inappropriate things to Claire, Andrew stood up to Brian and put him in his place. Also, the principle put tension on the group, threatening them and forcing them to write papers. All of the students held roles in the group. John’s role was the bully, but he could get the others to start talking about their thoughts and problems. Brian was the brain and finished the assignment given by the principle for the whole group. Claire was a pretty girl who could get whatever she wanted. All of the characters played very vital roles in the group.

As the film progressed more tensions started to arise. This occurs throughout the film when the characters have differences in opinions and the way that things should be done. For example, when John begins to make fun of Brian’s home life, then Andrew asks to see how his home life is. Also, when Allison lies to the group about all of the sexual things she has done, just to get Claire to say if she is a virgin or not. All of the secondary tension in the group was positive. It made the characters understand that they all had a lot of things in common and showed who they really were.
