Self-Introduction

Specific Purpose: To introduce myself to the students of SPCH 1315.

Central Idea: Brief introduction of my life, family and military career.

Introduction

I. Good evening, my name is Miguel Paredes and I was born in 1984 in Mexico.

II. Moved to the United States when I was 7 years old.

III. Joined the military and quickly advanced through the ranks.

IV. Married with two kids now.

(Transition: Arrived in Houston, TX in 2003.)

Body

I. Grew up in Houston, TX where I graduated from Sam Houston High School.

A. Was a straight A’s student until my senior year where I began to take school seriously.

1. Began to miss school days and grades began to get worse.

B. Upon graduation from High School I had no idea what to do and decided to join the military.

1. Becoming a Marine had always been a dream of mine.

2. Enlisted in the Army after talking to recruiters.

(Transition: Joining the Army has been the best decision I have ever made.)

II. Became a 13F, Fire Support Specialist and went through training at Fort Sill, OK.

A. My first duty station was Camp Casey, Republic of Korea.

1. Received great training and decided making the military a career was the best decision.

B. Second duty station was in Fort Hood, TX

1. Deployed to Iraq for 15 months and then for 12 months.

2. Got out of the Army

(Transition: Decided I had a “plan” was not the brightest idea.)

III. Could not find a suitable job that I enjoyed in the civilian and decided to join the Army again.

A. Hunted recruiters until one could help enter the Army as a prior service member.
