Is Old Technology Taking a Step Back

How many times in your life have you asked yourself if the old technology is better than the new one? It is true most of the time technology makes us better, more productive, informed, and it is convenient. It is way better to drive your own car than have to ride on a public bus with people you do not know, because you feel freer and it is convenient. However, did you ever ask yourself is it sustainable for the human race? The most widely quoted definition of sustainability or sustainable development is from Brundtland Commission of the United Nations on March 20, 1987: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” In my opinion it is not sustainable because every person driving a car is impacting the environment at a larger scale than having public transportation and it endangers the ability of having a clean environment for future generations. I think that Florida is one of the least sustainable states because its economy is based on growth with a population growth rate bigger than China, one day there will be no place to develop on.

Florida needs to find a way to have sustainable development. Florida’s growth is degrading the state’s quality of life. The state’s natural environment is being eroded by its increasingly fast growing population leading to pollution, water shortages and consequent restrictions, saltwater encroachment on aquifers, and loss of natural habitat and wildlife. Growing population has also been a major contributor to social problems such as overcrowding of schools and jails, urban sprawl with accompanying community disintegration, and increasing traffic congestion. A good way to fight this increasing population is with proper infrastructure. We need to start constructing with high density which will allow more people in a smaller area.
