Mr. Hunter
Part 1
President Andrew Johnson
WANTED: He had made plans to reunite the nation that was in the process of healing from the preceding Civil War.
BUT: The radical Republicans believed he was too soft and forgiving with the confederacy including the fact that he was allowing some of them to return to office
SO: Johnson decided to visit cities where he made enemies by defending his plan and his led to congress amending his reconstruction plan by overriding his vetoes on bills they had wanted to pass
Radical Republicans
WANTED: They wanted to control the south and make sure it did not return to their way fo life before the civil war with such things like slavery
BUT: President Johnson kept vetoing many of the bills that they had wanted to pass
SO: Many Republicans went alongside the radicals allowing them to override President Johnson's vetoes and going forth with their own plans
Southern Democrats
WANTED: Removal of all federal troops from the south and also they wanted change and a place in office
BUT: There were undisputed votes for Hayes in the election so a 15 member committee was made from representatives of both parties and southern Democrats had to go along with the decision of the committee
SO: They had decided to vote for Rutherford B. Hayes as 19th President of the US as long as he removed all remaining federal troops from the south and named a Southern Democrat to his cabinet.
Part 2
The main issue was that Abraham Lincoln and other leaders believed that it should be made easier for the south and confederacy to rejoin with the union while radical Republicans believed that the south had to go under punishment for what they had done. If I was a member of Congress, I would allow the south to join the union, instead of punishing them because punishment could cause another unwanted war.
