Introductions/ Overview

Long term survival of any organization is dependent on the overall planning of the resources at the company’s disposal. In this process planning plays a vital role for the organization to achieve its long term or short term goals. Microsoft has done just that, since it was founded in 1975 (Microsoft, 2010). I think Microsoft’s (MSFT) success can be attributed to its strengths early on. It’s focus on software, core of the company’s business and other services products for businesses and focus on consumer products have given the company edge and fueled its growth (MSFT, 2010).

As company grows and face adversity there are many way it can continue to keep its edge, this can be accomplished through Strategic planning, Operational Planning, and Strategic Management (Bateman, 2011). This allows the organization to evaluate it self externally and prepare it self internally as it look forward to the future. One important tool that any organization can use is the SWOT analysis, this is an “assessment of the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats” (Bateman, 2011) this allows the organization to look at it self internally and externally. I will use the “SWOT analysis” to look at some of the Strengths, Weaknesses of MSFT and also point out area of opportunities that lay ahead for MSFT and threats that it may be face as a global icon for computer software.

Strengths

There are variety of things that can be attributed to the organization’s strength according to Bateman & Snell “positive cash flow, skilled management and highly regarded brands” (Bateman, 2011) are just few of the example of what organization’s strengths can be. In Microsoft’s (MSFT) case it has been company’s focus early on that has helped it to become the leader in software products.
