Reflective report

Introduction:

Recently, as part of our programme in master of business studies, our PALS group visited a local company, Port Of Tyne. Port of Tyne is one of the UK’s largest trust ports, and principal northern gateway in north east region of England, which has five main business areas, conventional & bulk cargo, car terminals, cruise & ferries, logistics, and estates. As a public sector, there are no shareholders or owners; any surplus is ploughed back into the port for benefit of stakeholders of the trust. (www.portoftyne.co.uk) In order to gain full benefit and prepare presentation well, our PALS group planned and met several times before visiting the company, and then we reflect on what we got individually. In this paper, I will use some relevant theories and practice to present how our group performed in the visit and presentation, and how I develop as a learner in these activities.

Group performance:

According to group definition that provided by Adair (1986), group is “a collection of people who share most, if not all, of the following characteristics: a definable membership; group consciousness; a sense of shared purpose; interdependence; interaction; and ability to act in a unitary manner” (Adair 1986). Base on this theory, our PALS group was founded by share the common objective, research and present the company which we visited. The process of our group carry on that programme is, firstly we decided each person should collect the information individually, and then we gather and filter the detail which helpful, meanwhile, we collected and refined each question we will ask during the visiting. After we finished the visiting, we met together to lay out our presentation, and collect all relevant information that emphasis on human resource.
