INTERVIEWING
A job interview is an organized, purposeful conversation. The goal is for the
prospective employee to show they have the skills, background, and ability to do the job
and can successfully meet the company’s needs. The interview is one of the most
important parts of the job search process. It gives the Interviewer and the candidate an
opportunity to exchange information to determine whether they are a good match for the
position and for the company. The interview should be regarded as a focused business
conversation, and much preparation and planning is needed from both parties.
Interviewing is both an art and science. Most employers do not hire on the basis
of qualifications alone -- personality, confidence, enthusiasm, a positive outlook, and
excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills weigh in heavily on the selection
process. Knowing the right questions to ask, how to read one’s body language, and how to
remain professional are all skills that are necessary to conduct a successful interview.
(Smith, 2009) “The hardest to determine, as well as the most important part of
the process, is identifying the people skills a person bring to the job, because each
applicant wears a mask.” By understanding the applicant's personality style, values, and
motivations, you are guaranteed to improve your hiring and selecting process. How to
properly and legally conduct an interview enables you to select the best candidate for the
position, so I have created this easy to follow guideline for anyone with this responsibility.
Step 1 – Prepare & Plan
Prior to the interview make sure you understand the key elements of the job.
Develop a simple outline that covers the job duties. Screen the resumes and applications to
gain information for the interview. Identify the knowledge, attributes, and skills
the applicant needs for success and if the job requires special education or licensing, be
sure to include it on your list....
