Mobile Technology in Healthcare

The healthcare field is beginning to utilize more technology to care for patients in an effort to increase the patients’ active participation in their care, patient satisfaction and convenience for both patient and healthcare provider(Appleby, 2014). This is mainly due to the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act introduced in 2009. Since then the field has been provided incentives to integrate the use of technology in healthcare. Some of these uses include the use of mobile computing technology in monitoring patients’ vital signs, the use of social networking used as group support for patients with similar medical conditions and the related security concerns of transmitting personal medical information via wireless networks. We will also discuss the differences of monitoring patient vital signs via mobile technologies in contrast to in office visits.

Although using mobile technology to monitor vital signs is a new concept to me, per my research it is being adopted by more healthcare facilities due to the benefits for the facility and patient, ease of use to patients and that it reduces the inequalities of care due to the availability of mobile devices across socio-economic statuses(VANCOUVER, 2012). Tom Walker, the president and CEO of LGTmedical said "Mobile vital signs technology will serve as a valuable tool in assisting with medical diagnosis, decision support, chronic disease management and patient engagement in the coming years," said Tom Walker. LTGmedical is one of such healthcare facilities that is utilizing such technology.
