Review of simian Betaretrovirus type-1 in macaque hosts
University of Leiden, Molecular Aspects of RNA Viruses
This mini-review is an updated summary of Simian Betaretrovirus in macaques hosts, with particular focus on Simian Retrovirus type-1. Asian macaques are the natural hosts for this class of retroviruses. The Simian Retrovirus type-1 is a single stranded RNA retrovirus which establish persistent infections that result in immunodeficiency. Molecular insight in processing of the viral proteins and the life cycle is of major importance to interfere with these mechanisms in order to prevent immunodeficiency diseases. In this mini-review the molecular aspects of the Simian Retrovirus type-1 serotype are reviewed. Insight in the molecular mechanisms provide a valuable comparative model with other retroviral related infections for a better understanding of the aspects of retroviral-host interactions and retrovirus-induced immunosuppression.
