What is Quality of Life? In what different ways can we think about it? |

While it is widely recognized that quality of life is ultimately valuable for individuals, experts suppose that how quality of life should be defined and measured is complicated. In 1973, the United States officially published Social Indicators, which “contains a collection of statistics selected and organized to describe social conditions and trends” (Bung, 1975: 65). However, Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, believes that happiness depends on ourselves and enshrines happiness as a primary goal of life. Thus it can be seen that definitional differences result in different implements and criteria of quality of life and quality of life is regarded as a multi-scale and multi-dimensional concept that involves interacting objective and subjective elements (Costanza et al. 2007). This essay analyses measurements of quality of life from social judgments and subjective views. First, it discusses the approach to appraise quality of life by means of social indicators. Second, it expounds on quality of life associated with the subjective well being from the views of human needs and diverse cultures. Third, it states the role of quality of life in business decisions.

As concern with the pace of human life grows more intense, quality of life indicators seem to become increasingly prevalent. Using specific indicators to measure quality of life could be impersonal and independent of individuals’ perceptions and subjective experience (Diener and Suh, 1997).
