EMCC Chemistry Homework:

1. Name and describe the 3 subatomic particles that make up all atoms.

Subatomic particles are positively charged protons, uncharged neutrons, and negatively charged electrons. Protons and neutrons are located within te nucleus of an atom, and electrons move around the nucleus.

2. What are isotopes? How have they been used in experiments or medical treatments?

Iaotopes are atoms of the same element that differ in the number of neutrons. The radiation is used to date objects, create images and trace the movement of substance through the human body.

3. Name and describe the 3 basic types of reactions (or bonding) that occur between atoms.

Ionic Bonding- forms when electrons are transferred from one atom to another.

Covalent Bonding- results when two atoms share electrons in such away that each atom has a complete outer orbital.

Nonpolar and Polar Covalent Bonds- when the sharing of eletrons between two atoms is fairly equal, the convalent bonds is said to be a nonpolar covalent bond. The unequal sharing of eletrons in a covalent bond creates a polar covalent bond.

4. Water is really cool stuff. Briefly describe 4 of the 6 properties of water that make it so unique.

Specific heat-is the amount of energy that it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 °C. In other words, it takes a lot of energy to heat water.

Heat of vaporization-evaporative cooling, high, pulls heat from body, keeps you cool.

Universal solvent-water both charges, solute being dissolves, solvent does dissolving, hydrophilic loves water (+/-), hydrophobic hates water (no charge), ampipathic (both).

Cohesion and Adhesion-cohesion water bond to water, adhesion water bond to anything else hydrophilic, capillary action both work to move water up tree roots

5. What is released when strong acids are put in water?

Heat is release and it increases the number hydron ions.

6. What are bases or alkaline?...
