Lab 4: Connecting Point A to Point B

Lab Report

1. How should an Internet connection be made for the current campus? Why did you select this option over the others? AT&T is the carrier providing service to the existing campus as well as the new campus. Examine the offerings for Internet access to select the one that should be used. (10 points)

For this current campus, we can see by the diagram we have constructed a single central location for the IT servers called the New IT wing off from the administration building. Each of the Buildings will be connected with Cat5e cables hooked up to switches in each building and in the new IT Wing with VLANS to separate buildings.

2. How should the existing and new campus locations be connected to each other? (10 points)

In order for all buildings and new buildings in the future to be able to connect with each other, there must be Static IP addresses assigned as to not have the IP addresses constantly change on the network and interfere with connection and communication.

3. Should the two locations share an Internet connection? (10 points)

It would be ideal to have two locations share the same internet connection through hopefully Fiber so long as that is available in the area if not than the connection would be DSL. It is ideal to have the same internet connection as it would cut down on costs, and so long as VLAN’s are setup on the switches you would still have the same benefits as if you had two different internet connections.

4. Compare the advantages, disadvantages, and cost of fiber optic cable, 5 GHz wireless bridges, and free space optics as a means to interconnect the campus buildings to the IT wing of the Administration Building. (10 points)

As far as Fiber Optic cable one of the biggest advantages is higher and fastest speed which in our case for the campus we most certainly would want....
