Communication and Collaboration Strategy

A student who knows his personality type and learning styles can choose learning strategies and goals to aid in the student’s academic success. How a person learns to overcome the weakest links and build from the strengths will determine how successful the person will be in the academic and professional worlds.

At some point in the academic and professional worlds a person will have to work in a group or team situation. To work within group dynamics a person needs certain skills. Working in groups or on teams allows people to gain knowledge from others that team members may not have on his or her own. All team members will draw on their training, knowledge, experience, and abilities. Where one team member is lacking, another team member may be strong.

A person’s ability to know or find effective strategies for communication and collaboration provide teams and groups greater success rate than if each person worked individually. To know where a person’s strengths and weaknesses lay, a person must know what his or her learning intelligence and personality strengths are.

The learning intelligences are bodily-kinesthetic, verbal-linguistic, visual-spatial, logical-mathematical, musical, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and naturalistic (Carol Carter, Joyce Bishop, Sarah Kravits, 2007, pp. 39). Every learning intelligence has a different strength. In a team setting effective communication and collaboration is found when each team member knows where his or her strengths lie. Possessing this information, the members can step into a role that suits his or her strength.

A person who has a bodily-kinesthetic strength can use his or her body skillfully and takes in information through physical senses, such as touching.
