Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research could create a world in which there would be no need for transplants for sick patients or new treatments for an illness. These stem cells can turn into specialized cells and restore themselves into cell division creating thousands of new discoveries in medical science. However, the first stem cells found were from embryonic cells, found in an embryo, which started this controversy over stem cell research. Some people don’t agree with using these embryos so authorities have found that this research brings a social and ethical challenge. Now, the question of whether or not the study of stem cells should be permitted in medical research is a source of controversy in the United States today.

Stem cells have the ability to grow into any cell in the body, such as nerve, lung and brain cells that can replicate by themselves. With this ability in can provide a whole new world of treatments for patients that are suffering from diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and even Parkinson’s disease. For cancer, stem cells are taken from the bone marrow of an adult and transplanted into a patient. These cells kill these leukemia cells found in the bone marrow and the patient in injected with the new healthy stem cells. Heart disease causes many cells in the heart to weaken and dye because of such a low blood

supply. By injecting new stem cells from the heart it produces more healthy cells the can help the damaged muscle tissue in the heart to regroup. With diabetes new stem cell can help the body produce more insulin in the blood stream to help regulate the blood and sugar levels of the patients. For people with Parkinson’s disease that is caused from toxins in the body, the new stem cells can help destroy these harmful toxins and improve the life of the patient. Now, all of these treatments might not work for everyone but it is still worth a shot to help improve the quality of life for mankind.
