1. Organic Chem 4-Methylcyclohexene Part I. Synthesis

2. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is synthesizing the organic compound by using separation methods. This separation method is called simple distillation. The simple distillation is a separation process that synthesized 4-methycyclohexene from dehydration of methylcyclohexanol. In this lab, 4-methylcyclohexanol reacts with phosphoric and sulfuric acid to produce 4-methylcyclohexene. This alkene mixture experiment, purified by simple distillation to determines the product that produced.

3. The process of the synthesis is

4. Alteration to the experiment

* Step 2: On the procedure specified 50-ml rounded bottom flask to weigh the components. This RBF changed to 25 ml RBF per instructor order.

* Step 3: Add slowly the acids by using the pipettes.

* Step 8: NaCl container in the hood

* Step 2 &15: Small cork ring used for RBF to support on balance up on weighing the components.

* The designated waste container placed on fume hood 19.

5. Data

1) The actual quantities

Boiling point

4-methylcyclohexanol =171-173 0C

4-methylcyclohexene = 101-102 0C

Density

4-methylcyclohexanol = 0.914 g/cm3 at 200C

4-methylcyclohexene = 0.7991 g/cm3 at 200C

2) The product’s mass, bp, color, and physical state.

First Distillation

Mass of flask + stopper = 29.55g

Mass of flask + stopper + alcohol = 37.40g

Mass of alcohol = 37.40—29.55g= 8.85 g

Mass of alcohol= 8.85

Color= cloudy, colorless

State=liquid

Second Distillation

Mass receiver flask + stopper = 37.92g

Mass of flask + stopper + alkene = 41.99g

Mass of alkene = 41.99 – 37.92 = 4.07g

Product (4- Methylcychlohexene)

* Mass = 4.07g

* Color = clear, colorless

* State = liquid

* Melting point 96.5 – 102.1 0C

6. Theoretical yield:

Molar mass of C7H14O = 114.21 g/mol

Molar mass of C7H12 = 96.19 g/mol

And in the reaction they have one to one molar...
