1. Are the DFDs in PE in the figures 6-1 and 6-2 balanced? Show that they are, or they are not. If they are not balanced, how can they be fixed?

The conservation of inputs and outputs is called balancing. It means that when decomposing a DFD from one level to the next, we must have the same inputs and outputs to processes. In this case Figure 6-1 shows two sources of information going into the system that are generated by the customer, purchase and coupons. Figure 6-2, on the other hand, shows multiple inputs coming from two additional sources, marketing database and product database. The conservation rule is omitted; the two figures are not balanced. The outputs may be the same, but the diagram is not balanced. In order to be balanced to the context diagram, the two additional sources of information illustrated at Figure 6-2 need to be added.
