Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is a timeless story that has inspired many other great books, movies and works of art. Because the story has been such an inspiration through the years, it should be allowed to be read in high schools. Yet it has to be taught in a way that the students know this is a story of fiction and is meant to pull the reader in with is dramatic ending.

The story of Romeo and Juliet can also be used to teach students of the Shakespearian type English, by studying famous quote s like “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefor art thou Romeo, deny thy father and refuse thy name Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love. And I’ll no longer be a Capulet. Or “What is in a name? That which call a rose By any other word smell so sweet.” By analyzing these lines and studying this story students can gain a real insight on how people interacted and spoke during the time the story was written. Also they may find a connection in these sentences that may move the students to express themselves in a more intelligent way.

Even though this play was written in the 16th century and not of modern language, if presented the right way it can still be relevant to teenagers today. Romeo and Juliet should be presented to teenagers as what not to do in relationship. And sometimes parents and authority figures, are only human and sometimes do not have the teenagers best interest in mind. Using examples from the play could also be a tool to get teenagers to talk about issue that are troubling them. Examples like Romeo and Juliet’s interaction with one another. They were in an adult situation and both were too young to be that involved, and they did not know how to handle the fallout when problems arose.

In today’s world teenagers are going to do whatever feels good and seems to please their peers. The best teachers and parents can do is to guide them in right direction. To let them know that failing is a part of life and it...
