Evaluation of the Chevrolet Volt

The Chevrolet Volt is one of the newest cars coming out of Detroit that answers the growing demand for electric cars. The Volt has shown much promise, drawing new buyers to Chevrolet dealerships who had been previously estranged. With gas prices at all-time highs, many consumers are considering the value of purchasing a hybrid vehicle; they are weighing the options between the initial price tag, and the potential gas savings. The Volt has received positive feedback with regards to consumer satisfaction and is rated high amongst its peers. Despite its initial progress, the Volt has recently been plagued with technical problems involving its electric battery, which is scaring away potential buyers. Overall the Chevrolet Volt looks to be a smart decision, pending the outcome of the investigation regarding its electric batteries.

With ever high gasoline prices, and a lingering recession, many consumers are seeking relief through hybrid or electric vehicles. According to estimates from Boston Consulting the number of electric cars on the road could reach 40 million by 2020.1 Detroit automakers have been scrambling since the crisis in 2008 to become the number one source for green automobiles. Chevrolet answer to this demand was to introduce the Chevrolet Volt in mid-December 2010. The Volt was proclaimed the most fuel efficient car in 2011 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.1 Furthermore, an article by Consumer Reports shows that the Volt is cheaper to drive than the Toyota Prius hybrid with a combined MPGe and MPG of 60.1 The Volt is also the current best choice for short trips, as it uses only its electric motor for the first 35 miles for an equivalent 90 mpg.2
