According to Cornish (2004), a trend is the general direction in which something tends to move, but no trend continues forever. Sooner or later, the trend will slow down, stop completely, or reverse. However, if a trend is used carefully it will give the generation of today a way to form a path into the future. This path is called a trend analysis which is the concept of collecting information and attempting to spot a pattern or trend in the information. Trends must be looked at thoroughly, and the purpose of a trend analysis is to examine a trend to find out its nature, causes, speed of development, and potential impacts. Trend analysis is helpful because moving with trends and not against them will lead to everyone gaining knowledge. There are several growing trends in today’s society. This writer will focus on the area of biotechnology.

Biotechnology is a broad term that deals with a wide range of technologies based on biology, especially when used in agriculture, food science, and medicine. Since prehistoric times, biotechnology has flourished, in one form or another. When the first bakers found that they could make a soft, spongy bread rather than a firm, thin cracker, they were acting as fledgling biotechnologists. The first animal breeders, realizing that different physical traits could be either magnified or lost by mating appropriate pairs of animals, engaged in the manipulations of biotechnology (Mak, 2011).

There are number of jargon terms for sub-fields of biotechnology. Red biotechnology is biotechnology applied to medical processes. An example would include an organism designed to produce an...
