M.C. Mehta Case:
Facts about Child Labour in India
* 4.66 % of the child population are working - 1971
* Number of working children in the age group of 5-14 years was estimated
* At 16.3 million - National Sample Survey 27th round (1972-73)
* At 16.25 million - National Sample Survey 27th round (1977-78)
* Figure has reduced to 11.16 million – in 1981 census
But the National Sample Survey Organization estimates the number at 17.58 million in 1985.
Note:
Official estimates did not consider child workers in the unorganised sector, and therefore considered as underestimates. Estimates might vary in the range from 44 million to 100 million if the unorganised sector was considered.
