Peripheral Physiological Functions Limiting VO2 max

Introduction

The capability of the working skeletal muscles in, both healthy and unhealthy individuals, to increase their O2 uptake (V02), has been debated for decades. The main argument is whether V02 max is limited by either a central or a peripheral mechanism (Sutton, 1992).

The classical contest between the limiting factors of maximal oxygen uptake (V02 max), has been (and undoubtedly will continue to be), at the forefront within the exercise physiology field, since the mind boggling discovery of what limits a person’s maximal oxygen uptake (V02 max) in the early 1900s. It is well known that numerous distinguished exercise physiologists have been determined to unearth the answer(s) of what does/is/are the true limiting factors of maximal oxygen uptake (V02 max). It would seem that the answers are not only varied and conflicting, but extremely interesting to debate. All present evidence in support of either Hill’s theory, which began this phenomenon, provide, for some people, a fascinating, though contentious opportunity to rebut these theories.

In order to understand this complex argument, then, it will be beneficial to understand what constitutes a limiting factor to peripheral physiological function as well as comprehending the term maximal oxygen uptake (V02 max).

It is therefore necessary to understand that exercise requires an increase in oxygen uptake (V02), to supply energy for the working muscles.

Terminology

For the purpose of this argument it is imperative to understand the terms below in the following context:

Definition of ‘maximal oxygen uptake (V02 max)’ : The highest/maximum rate of oxygen, which can be taken up and utilized by the body during high intensity or severe dynamic exercise whilst breathing air at sea level.

The V is the symbol for volume and 02 refers to oxygen, and the dot over the ύ means per unit of time, usually per minute. It is this idiom which is...
