Living in this world, unfairness is all around. We cannot judge everything with rational reasons. Can you assure that the more effort you pay, the more you will gain? No! I can definitely answer. The rich can control everything while the poor have no choice since they are born. In some countries, female even have no rights in the society, they are born to help the male to continue their generation. Many social issues in this world are unfair for everyone. Both Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation are revealing the muckraking works in the food industry, which also carry out the problem of unfairness under Capitalism in different periods of time. Throughout this essay, we will look into some similarities and differences of social situations by illustrating different unfair treatments to the workers. We can see how Juris Rudkus’s family tries their very best to survive in the Chicago’s Packingtown due to their migratory identities in The Jungle, while Fast Food Nation tries to expose the dark side of the American food production through different processes.
We need money in order to survive in this economy, and getting a job is the only way we can earn money from. Everyone wishes to earn money to satisfy their wants, the rich wish to live in a more luxury way while the poor just wish to earn money in order not to die of starvation. In The Jungle, Sinclair narrates an accident of a child when he is working in a cold place, “One bitter morning in February the little boy worked at the lard-machine with Stanislovas came about an hour late, and screaming with pain. They unwrapped him, and a man began vigorously rubbing his ears; as they were frozen stiff, it took only two or three rubs to break them short off.” (91) The little boy needs to struggle for living, he never thought of the danger of his job.
