Behavioral and Social/Cognitive Approaches to Forming Habits

Habits are formed from the early stages of childhood and develop further into adult hood. One’s behavior and social interactions play highly influential part in the development of habits. Once a habit is formed it can be quite difficult to break. It requires the ability to recondition one’s self to behave differently. I struggle with a harmful habit of my own. Since the age of 14 years old I have been smoking cigarettes. Although I have managed to stop on a few occasions, ultimately I return to smoking sooner or later. I intend to analyze what caused this addiction and obtain a better understanding of why I cannot stop.

Since I was a small child, I have watched both my parents smoke an innumerable amount of cigarettes. I would always tell them that smoking is bad for them and that they needed to quit. At age 12 started my rebellious phase. I did not have rules mostly and the ones that I did have were not followed. This was mostly because there were no consequences to my actions. One day while my mother was not home, I stole a cigarette from her room and decided to light up. At first I coughed of course, but then I began to like the smooth minty flavor. Soon, I began standing near the corner store and asking someone who was going to make a purchase to buy me a pack of cigarettes. Mostly I would sneak and smoke. One day, I was on my back porch smoking while my mother was not home. It just so happened she got home just in the nick of time to catch me raising the cigarette to my mouth. I was of course shaken up and quickly threw the cigarette over the ledge.
