Derby Telegraph reporter Amy Guard searches for the perfect Christmas party dress from Derby's charity shops.

NOT everybody can afford to buy a designer outfit to wear at their Christmas party and with presents to be buying, often high street outfits feel as though they are breaking the bank.

Charity shops are great for finding beautiful, sometimes unique items at an affordable price – and Derby has plenty.

To top it off, as well as saving the pennies on an outfit, you are also contributing to charity in the process.

I went along to charity shop Age UK at Park Farm in Allestree to look for outfits that were suitable to wear for a Christmas party, a meal or an event.

One of the beauties of shopping in charity shops for an outfit is that you're less likely to find yourself in a room with another person wearing the same thing – nobody wants that.

If you choose high street collections over the festive period and all year round, you unfortunately run this risk.

So, as I rifled through the rails looking at all the different outfits in all their various sizes, I selected four different dresses to prove that you really can buy a fantastic outfit for, in some cases, under £5.

One dress that I picked out was a black sleeveless dress with gold beads in the shape of crosses detailing it.

I wear a lot of black anyway, but you cannot go wrong with a little black dress, it's one of the laws of fashion. The gold beads added a little winter sparkle and it fitted really well.

The dress was from high street fashion retailer New Look and was £6.99 when Age UK first started selling it, but it had been reduced to just £3.49.

To buy a new outfit for just £3.49 is much less than buying a brand-new dress from a popular high street store – it's around the price of a large coffee, or one drink at your Christmas party.
