SLP Assignment

Every day I wake up I wonder what my day will entail. I knew what I was in for when I swore the oath of enlistment, but I was in for so much more when I became a member of the Security Forces Squadron. Known as one of the most stressful and dangerous jobs of the Air Force, I take every aspect of my job very seriously.

I am known as a “Cop” to those who do not wear the Blue Beret or Badge. I wake up at 0530 every morning, head to the armory and arm with an M9 Berretta and a M4 Carbine rifle. I know the risks of the job. I know that at any time a simple routine traffic stop can turn into a high-risk traffic. I know that responding to a verbal altercation can at any moment turn into a physical altercation. That is just part of the job.

I believe that as SF members we are adequately informed of the risks within our daily duties at our home stations and before we deploy. The risks are acceptable and reasonable for the protection of lives and the protection of United States assets that are vital to national security. We are well trained and well equipped to perform those duties.

One of our core values is “Service Before Self”. We are expected to take leaving our families for months at a time, with a grain of salt. It is our duty. However, every now and again, there may be someone who is not stable enough to handle that expectation. If something is wrong, mentally, physically or even spiritually, this person would be a hindrance to the mission. If they were to become unstable at an inopportune moment, they can cause more harm and stress to the situation. It is their right to seek medical, spiritual or physical attention in order to rectify what is going on. We are expected to be ready to deploy at anytime, and it can be hard, not only for us, but for family members as well.
