Disrespect; comes from the word respect, added by a prefix dis- which means “not”. Disrespect is to show lack of respect or courtesy as well as show lack of respect for insult. There are a plethora of ways that ‘disrespect’ can be interpreted in the Army. Disrespect comes in all shapes and forms, it may be verbal or physical. Disrespect has no boundaries or limitations, depending on the situation disrespect may be obvious or subliminal. Talking in formation is a form of disrespect as well as giving a facetious answer to an NCO. One is obvious and one is not so obvious. Depending on the situation an NCO may find a specific action as being disrespectful although the other soldier may disagree. Being disrespectful is not tolerated in the military even if it may be for the greater good. Regardless of any situation one must remain professional when addressing any leadership or even peers. Interpretation of disrespect may be subjective therefore it is vital to ensure you do not show the slightest of disrespect to any of those around. Even if you may feel what you said or did was not disrespectful, your NCO may feel otherwise. Disrespect in the Army can lead to numerous issues. For example if a soldier is habitually disrespectful to an NCO, that soldier’s peers may take notice resulting in the NCO losing power base. It is mission essential for an NCO to remain in control of all situations thus disrespect can almost always compromise any mission. Respect is the foundation that the United States Army is built upon. Without respect there is no need for a rank structure. If one does not respect their NCO’s or higher ranking officials than there is no leadership and motivation to rank up will be solely based on personal interests. Rank comes with experience, determination, and hard work. Therefore one must always recognize the rank above you with the upmost respect.
