What made you?
Nature versus Nurture is perhaps one of the biggest debates of our time right along side with the Leatherman versus Swiss Army debate. All that separates the two really is that the prior is more heavily researched and explored (and is of actual importance…). This debate of Nature vs. Nurture dates back to the late 1800’s with John Locke, as well as having its moments in the early Roman Empire era, and as current as the last decade. This theory also happens to be the baseline of many urban legends, myths, and even children’s stories that people have come to be familiar with. Remember the movie “The Jungle Book”? That fun Disney movie about a boy who was abandoned in the Jungle, and left to fend for himself? How about Tarzan, the man who was raised by apes and was then discovered by other people only to turn into a true gentleman? These stories are present all throughout history, and remain in our history due to the interest people show in them.
Looking back into the time of the Roman Empire; citizens of Rome believed in the Romulus and Remus myth. For those of you that are not familiar with Roman mythology the story is that Mars- the Roman god of war- left his two sons on earth, to be cared for and raised by a she-wolf. These brothers then supposedly grew up to create the great empire of Rome. This myth, as popular as it was back when it was created, is still a hot topic today. Just recently, new reports have been published stating that Italian archeologists believe that they have found the cave where Romulus and Remus were born and raised. It causes one to question, how can you find something real and physical that generates from a myth? In Josh Foli’s post, “La Bocca Della Verita” he writes about the urban legend of La Bocca Della Verita, and shows how a legend, is tied to something physical and believably real, in his case, the actual stone carving sitting in the Roman Cathedral.
