America has three auto makers who are Ford Motor, General Motors and Chrysler. In the past General Motors was the largest car company, but that has changed and now the company is suffering and will be filing bankruptcy. Chrysler has also begun the process of filing bankruptcy and being taken over by an Italian company called Fiat. As an American consumer, the question that comes to mind is how can American help? Are we as Americans willing to allow our American car identity to fail? The answer to these type of questions and many more like them should be no. As Washington struggles to tame the global financial crisis, the future of the U.S. auto industry hangs in the balance (Wong, 2009). The economy is struggling and Americans should support and purchase American cars.

American cars offer consumers reliability, safety, economical and low insurance rates while also being affordable. These qualities alone provide a customer with everything they need when making the decision to purchase a car. For those consumers who are on a budget, you not only get a great car but you get a good value for the money you are investing. If you make a car to suit the needs of consumers, they will buy (Karlin, 2009).

Many consumers buy foreign cars such as Toyota and Honda. While these two types of automobiles have a good record of providing quality and longevity to the consumers who purchase them, there are many American cars that can be compared to these foreign cars. Globalization and outsourcing are blamed by many for the failure of the major companies in the American auto industry and for the loss of so many jobs. In the latest consumer reports poll, 81% of Americans say they are likely to consider buying a car from an American manufacturer and only 47% would consider buying foreign (Yarrow 2009).
