Part One Chapter summary

Nick followed Tom to meet his mistress, Myrtle, in Mr. Wilson’s Garage and he had a brief meet with Mr. Wilson. Nick was invited to join the party that held in Myrtle’s sister Catherine’s house. During the party time, Nick observed the behavior of the visitors, Myrtle, Catherine and Tom. They talked about Gatsby, Nick’s neighbor and the ugly performance of them led Nick to go deep into the dispirited, reckless, greedy, snobbish epitome of upper levels of American stratum. The party breaks up when Myrtle starts using Daisy's name, and Tom breaks her nose with a blow of his open hand.

Part Two Focus on----- Character

Nick, as a narrator and observer of the novel, he is honest tolerant and polite. He moves from the Midwest to New York to learn the bond business. He deserved the description that he reserved judgments and he had the advantages that others didn’t have.

Tom is a cruel man who lives life irresponsibly. Even though he is rich, he is arrogant, over confident and self-centered. His words indicate that he is direct and independent. Daisy is Tom’s wife and Nick’s cousin. She is attractive and caring. But she is too weak to stand out for her rights.

Gatsby is a mysterious person who is rich, funny, but lonely. Lives next to Nick in a mansion; throws huge parties, complete with catered food, open bars, and orchestras; people come from everywhere to attend these parties, but no one seems to know much about the host. He is the main character of the novel.

Myrtle is Tom’s lover and Mr. Wilson’s wife. She pretended to be rich and she is jealous of the affluent life of Daisy because of her dishonesty and her poorer living condition compared to Daisy.

Mr. Wilson is Myrtle’s husband who is a stupid but an ill-advised person.”He is so dumb he doesn’t know he is alive.” He is a hard-working man full of dreams for the future, but he is passive and weak in voice.
