Re: Weeding Out the Problem (Exercise 1, 2, 3.)

Exercise 1:

Umberto could have researched more about the name on the internet to make sure there is no bad reputation on the name. The benefits Umberto would receive from the internet would be, letting them know that there is a negative impact on the name BoPal because of the disaster that took place in the city of Bhopal. The internet would have had many articles explaining how people lost their lives over the chemical gas leak, so Umberto should have researched more carefully and saw more similar names related to this incident. Before, Umberto decided to name the product, the company should have done some market research through the internet and thought of product adaptation, which involves making changes to an existing product.

Exercise 2:

A) The environmental difference that Umberto ignored was the economic environment of India. They ignored that there was an environmental disaster in India.

B) Umberto could have prevented the misnaming of it insecticide by making sure the chemical engineer was aware of the product and tried giving it a name that would go better with the actual product, because the name, “BoPal,” doesn’t give you any idea of what it actually is. Chemical engineer could have researched about common names and saw different meanings of the names.

Exercise 3:

The mistake Umberto made in responding to protests over the BoPal insecticide were that they never explained why the name, “BoPal,” was chosen for their new product.
