Evaluation and Judgment

* What are the different ways in which we evaluate people? Personally, when first meeting someone or crossing someone’s path I evaluate people on their appearance (first impression should be your best), their body language, dress attire, the way they speak and overall their approach. It has to be something that stands out from that person in order to grasp my attention. Impression (schemata) serves a number of important functions (Gilbert, 1998). The function allows us to make conclusions about other people. For example, when assuming someone showing friendliness I consider them as being nice and at ease person to be around. The second schemata, plays a crucial role in how we construe and remember information. Schemata can lure us into “remembering” things about people that we never actually observed. As we get to know people we begin to build attributes towards them. This causes one to stereotype. Stereotype is a set of characteristics believed to be shared by all members of social category.

* How do these factors play a role in our expectations of other people? What I’ve learned is that I expect people to be how I portray them to be. For example, I portray Hollywood celebrities to be full of happiness and rich because of their appearance, the cars they drive and houses that they have and behavior shows fun, happy, and (just a cool person) I would want to be around. Assuming that this all together person is happy, when reality sits in they are different people because of some difficult childhood memories that their dealing with, or have mental issues anything that will cause them to be different behind the scenes. One’s appearance make people assume something based on perception of what people supposed to be.
