Introduction

Business traces its origins back centuries to times where “technology” was comprised of the most rudimentary tools. At its origin, business was simply arm's length exchanges of goods to satisfy the demands of consumers. Though hindsight is 20/20, it is still hard to envision a time in which simple machines could be considered technology. In contrast, today's business is heavily influenced by the newer generation of technology – heavily comprised of information technology. Information technology has led to innovation that has made business more universally acceptable, convenient, and economically friendly across the world.

Evolution and Application of Information Technology in Business

The essence of information technology deals with utilizing consumer or market information to attempt to gain an advantage on competition. This information has evolved drastically over the years, but the general outcome is always the same in that organizations that utilize IT effectively will fare better with ceterus paribus. In the earliest stages of information technology, organizations could use consumer information gathered without computer systems to observe consumer trends and tailor their marketing strategy. During the information and computer ages, information technology has grown as a field exponentially. The computer age began around 1980 when radio communication became prevalent and on-site communications in organizations allowed more cohesiveness within establishments (Technology). This served as an imperative elementary milestone in information technology – the development of remote communication. With retrospective knowledge, it is clear to see that communication is the area which information technology has changed everyday life the most.
