Executive Summary

The industry of shipping and package delivery has emerged throughout the years as a very vital component in order for a business to survive. With more and more companies becoming global, the need for supply chain services all over the world is a necessity to compete with competitors. The two most recognize names in the industry of shipping, arguably are the United Parcel Service, (UPS) and Federal Express, (FedEx). Both companies have facilitated the process of delivering information and products around the world and have aided other companies with their supply chain services.

UPS and FedEx have competed with each other for years, with FedEx focusing more on next day delivery, while UPS took control of the ground delivery service. As the years progressed, UPS started to penetrate the next day delivery market thus allowing them to compete with FedEx at a higher level. Today, both companies have created innovative ways of meeting customer needs and have continued to force the hand of each competitor. The process of sorting packages has really been work out into a science with these two firms, allowing them to process an amazing amount of packages daily. The technological advances that both companies have created have put them a step above the rest in the industry and have aided them in their creation of a competitive advantage.

UPS and FedEx have come up with ground breaking ideas and have branched out into other types of businesses. Because of the competitive environment both companies have created, they continue to find new ways to save on costs and create savings for their customers. In an industry that will continue to grow, because of new business opportunities overseas, it is safe to say that both FedEx and UPS have secured their future as the top two companies in this trade.
