Appendix A: The Ethical Leadership Debate

In the debate on the Ethical Leadership, the class was split into teams; each representing different characters in the case study and debated among each other on behalf of their characters.

In the debate, Team 1 who was representing Mike Gustavsson argued against the notion of the debate topic as he believed that an ethical leader should influence their employee by setting a sample for the employees, together with the proper corporate governance at the top management would benefit the individuals in the organization as well as society (Treviño, Hartman, & Brown, 2000; Tariq & Abbas, 2013). However, the observers questioned Mike’s honesty in his involvement in a protest against the company his daughter worked at. Despite Mike seem to have conflicting against his perspective of ethical leadership, I believed that Mike on stage 5 of Kohlberg’s moral development; social-contact orientation as he clearly have his own personal value and opinion on the law and was willing to take action when he believed a change is required (Kohlberg & Hersh, 1977).

Meanwhile, Jan Edwards represented by Team 2 embodied the ethical leadership by showing active efforts to influence her employee’s ethical behaviors, one of the most important aspects of ethical leadership (Brown & Treviño, 2006). She also argued against the debate topic using the success of the company as a proof that ethical leadership and corporate governance were efficient and beneficial to both the shareholder and society.
