Identity

A person’s identity is defined by what he or she creates for himself or herself, based from the actions and decisions that one person makes. Identity is an earned trait of a human being, whether the identity and the activities, which value that identity, are good or bad. Creating a name for oneself is entirely up to that one person to work towards creating a positive identity.  Even with a renowned experience, a influential predecessor, or a number of other influences, one must use these factors to one’s own benefit only in developing an identity of one’s own.

Finding one’s true identity within themselves is a huge responsibility, and a challenging task.  In William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the old antagonist, Claudius, exemplifies how people create their own identity. Everyone is born with an empty mind and aren’t born with evil minds. Claudius chooses to take on the role of evil by murdering his brother to be king then marries the brother’s wife. The Ghost states “serpent” has struck the king and now he “wears his crown” and that this was action was driven for one sole reason, the throne (Act 1 Scene5). Claudius murdering his own brother demonstrates how people choose to be filled with jealously and evil identity even they are born a wealthy home.

An individual is able to create an identity for himself or herself because they are completely in power of the choices that are made. The narrator in the novel Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellis, is an example of the ability to create an identity through his own decisions. In Invisible Man, a young black boy grows up paint problems of racial discrimination; through out his life he is constantly battling to create his identity and looking for who he really is. The narrator gets better with the tired everyone’s ignorance and he soon joined a group called the Brotherhood.
