Case: The AtekPC Project Management Office

AtekPC is a mid-sized U.S. PC maker organization with sales of 1.9 billion in 2006. In the case, it is mentioned that AtekPC has a large number of employees i.e. 2100 full time employees and 200 part timers. The case further illustrates how AtekPC was struggling to bring business to the organization in competition with other PC makers. The case explains how the organization was trying to implement cost reduction strategies in supply chain and distribution departments. According to the case, AtekPC’s latest financial result showed gradual drop in sales and profitability. The drop in the numbers had occurred because the consumers were not upgrading their personal computers to cut costs and avoid unnecessary hassles.

The other reason behind AtekPC’s financial drop was its failure to mature itself during theh industry transition phase. The transition phase was when the technology behind the PC industry was transforming to advanced components. The case further explains how the organization was trying to transform itself by launching a Project Management Office (PMO) in the organization. The organization had incepted the office with a mix of experienced employees along with new comers to the industry. The objective of the office was not well defined by the organization thus leading to confusion amongst the employees of the organization as well as the team members from the PMO itself. The major issue faced by the PMO was the transition of the organizations operation from a traditional approach to a more modern approach. The resistance of change to a modern approach of operation with the help of the organization’s PMO was seen as a key issue in this short case.
