Abstract

The Manhattan project was an incredible project that took place at a time in history when the world was experiencing many changes on all fronts including: politically, financially, and scientifically. It was one of the most secretive projects that took place in United States history. The project was roused by a letter written by one of history’s most famous physicists, Albert Einstein, to the United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR). The letter warned of a new science that was once just a possibility that became a probability. This science would potentially be harmful if it got into the wrong hands and was misused. FDR took this letter seriously and assembled his own team of scientist, partnering with Canada and the UK. The United States succeeding in honing the probable science by creating the Atomic bomb. The bomb was used to end WWII and forever changed the way of the world by pioneering new advancements in science and inevitably leading the US and Russia into the cold war which lasted 45 years.

Events Leading to the Manhattan Project and Its Outcome

The Manhattan project began in 1939 under Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. It was a very secretive and unique project that took place during World War II headed by the United States. The project was partnered with and supported by the United Kingdom and Canada. The price tag of the first nuclear weapon was a mere four years, 130,000 people, and $26 billion (in 2014 dollars), (Palmer,2014, p.1). There were various sites used for testing and researching including New York, Tennessee, Illinois, Washington, and New Mexico. The most important aspect of the project was the development of the atomic bomb, the influence it had in ending World War II (WWII), and the way atomic energy is applied in today's technology.
