1. What problems does Robin Hood have? What issues need to be addressed?

• Band is oversized

• Band requires increasing resources to sustain life

• Travelers (with the most to lose) were no longer travelling through the forest – causing a decline in the band’s revenue stream

• Changes in the external environment were making the band’s business model obsolete

• Robin needs a new strategy – he will need to train new members and have an effective change management strategy in place to ensure long-time members buy in to the new strategy (legacies)

• Robin needs to consider cross-pollination of important duties – currently he has only one person in charge of each important role. If he looses a team member it would be a significant blow to the band placing them at great risk

2. Do Robin Hood and the Merrymen need a new mission? new objectives? a new strategy?

• A new strategy is required to respond to the change in the environment and to develop a new

“mental model”

• For example…travellers are now avoiding the forest to protect what little they have and they are doing so at a cost and inconvenience

3. What strategic options does Robin Hood have? Is continuing with the present strategy an option or is the present strategy obsolete?

• Robin Hood needs to weigh the benefits and risks of the following options:

o Join forces with the Barons to rescue King Richard in return for amnesty?

o Consider expansion/diversification to other areas?

o Kill the Sheriff as a defensive strategic move

o Change to a fixed transit tax

• Robin’s current strategy is becoming obsolete, as wealthy people would avoid coming to the forest to avoid being robbed by the band. As well, Robin’s band is growing larger and food is becoming scarce. If “robbing the rich and giving to the poor” is their current strategy, and rich people are now avoiding the area because their fame was spreading, then clearly, Robin needs to consider a new strategy or significantly alter his current...
