William Golding is known for his most prominent novel, Lord of the Flies that has been apprised by critics who call it a one and only book of its time. Every chapter in every book is full of information to guide you through the author’s tale to tell. The first chapter of Lord of the Flies is full of information such as how the setting of the whole story is and is given great detail from every grain of sand to every palm tree and rock. The beginning chapter also gives you a notion of the characters and their appearances and some characteristics that the kids start off with but gradually change, as with any novel. Then you have the formation of how the kids first deal with being on an island, alone. It explains how they organize themselves the best way they can, with no adult help just purely a group of young English boys copping with what they have.

The first character of Golding’s novel is Ralph and is some detail before given his name at first. As for before being on the island all that is given is that his father is a commander in the Navy who he proclaims will rescue them off the island once he realizes of the crash. Ralph mentions his father because he tells the second character explained on the island, Piggy that he learned to swim at an early age because of his father being in the Navy. By that you can figure that Ralph probably has some sort of notion of how to survive on the island or at least will have the strength for some tasks that are needed.

Being the first character shown and given such detail it seems as though Ralph could be given the introduction of a main character in the book. By the way Golding presents Ralph he is given the characteristic of being driven. It starts off with him already up from the crash and fully conscious, already walking alone to the lagoon.
