In this turbulent time for families, it is important to have a firm Biblical foundation and Theological understanding of the family. With God at the center, families can become “gospel-empowered training bases for the conflict.” There are a few things I have learned in this class that I have found to be most helpful and thought-provoking which is at the center of Theology of the Family.

The first block foundational to a Biblical view of the family is the doctrine of the Trinity. The roles and the intimate relationship of the Trinity can be seen within the structure of a family. God the Father is “supreme in authority among the persons…he is responsible for devising the grand purposes and plans that take place through all of creation and redemption.” God the Son is “under the Father’s authority and seeks always to do the Father’s will…and seeks to glorify the Father in all he does.” God the Spirit is “under both the Father and the Son…the Spirit seeks to glorify the Son.” Within the human family, the husband and father is the head of the household which is a God-given responsibility to be the physical and spiritual leader of his wife and children. This is seen in Ephesians 5:23, “For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church…” However, he should also love his wife “as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,” and discipline, love, and teach his children in the ways of the Lord. Wives are to submit to their husbands as a reflection of the “church’s privilege of absolute submission before the lordship of the Messiah.” This submission is not one of oppression, but of joy.
