History and Backgrounds of Tattoos

Cultures from every corner of the globe have practiced the art of tattooing, from customs, introduction into society, or to express themselves for what they stand for. There are many different cultures and societies around the globe that use tattoos as symbols of religion, the tribes they represent, symbols of status in their society or religious beliefs. The Indian people use temporary tattoos called Henna. Henna which is referred to as Emend is an ancient Indian body art. This art is used to create a contemporary design with exotic patterns on various parts of the body. This is traditionally applied to women who are preparing to get married; this particular tattoo is applied to the feet and hands and is considered good luck. This ritual dates back to 5000 years ago. This tattoo is made from a paste that fades from the skin in 1-4 weeks. (Hudson 2008)

In China the art of tattooing is called “Win Sheen” in Chinese. This term means the “puncture of the body”. The Chinese have practiced tattoos for many years. In China a tattoo is not considered a symbol that someone would get to show an artistic meaning. The Chinese considered that one’s body is a precious gift from the parent and should not be abused or defaced by a tattoo. Many years ago the Chinese courts would find someone guilty of a crime and have a tattoo placed on there face, then banish them for a certain amount of time from the country. When returning they would have a permanent tattoo on their face showing that they were considered a criminal. Most individuals in present day that have tattoos are members of the underground criminal society rather than ordinary citizens. (Pei 1999)
