Consider the structure of the following introductory paragraph written by a former La Trobe University student.

Can the benefits of implementing Information Systems be measured? Discuss this in relation to an existing organisation.

An important question that has been debated for almost a decade is whether computers contribute to productivity growth (Brynjolfsson, 1998), and economists have tried for years to figure out why companies pour hundreds of billions of dollars into computer technology without getting significant gains in output (Richman, 1994). In fact, research on the profitability of computerised systems has produced mixed, often non-generalizable, and even contradictory results. Until recently, few studies have been successful in showing that Information Systems (IS) can contribute to the bottom line. Nevertheless, it is argued in this paper that there are measurable benefits in implementing IS, but only when the technology is integrated into the existing organizational system and all stake holders are included in the process. This paper analyses the management of an IS function in a Danish health care company, Novo Nordisk, and considers how this could be measured.
