Organizational Commitment and Group Communication
Organizational commitment: organizational commitment is a key factor in determining how successful organization is in obtaining compliance, identification and, internalization in their workforce. Commitment can be described as attachment and loyalty in the organization. It also can be defined as “Psychological bond that ties the employee to the organization” (0’Reilly, 1990). Organization commitment comes from understanding what an employee needs or looking for in the organization.
According to Meyers and Allen there are three models of commitment-Affective commitment (emotional commitment), Continuance commitment (financial commitment) and normative commitment (intellectual commitment). These different commitments can have varying effects on the organization’s performance therefore it is important for an organization to understand them and strategize accordingly.
In today’s dynamic world and increased job insecurity, it is hard for an employee to feel committed. People constantly feel that they can lose their job anytime and don’t feel committed to the organization. According to U.S (United States) labor department report in 2009 the economy lost 524,000 jobs in December 2008 and 1.9 million in the year's final four months. Employees need to be reassured that their jobs are secure; otherwise they will not exert as much effort in achieving organizational objective.
Many organizations leadership avoid dealing with commitment problems simply because they assume that problem does not exist. They believe that if people are doing their job and following rules and regulation, the problem does not exist. The fact is that that they mistake the compliance with commitment.
