Immigration Reform

Currently the United States' policies regarding immigration are very strict making it very difficult for people to gain citizenship and even entry into the country especially in the wake of 9/11. This creates a hardship for people trying to emigrate from their current country for many reasons such as poor working conditions, political unrest, or religious freedom. It also keeps a lot of people who would be assets to the country’s economy from working and spending money. There are many problems regarding the current policies and I believe the United States should take a different approach when dealing with immigration to mitigate many of the current problems. Keeping in mind that America was founded by immigrants, we should continue to provide this refuge in order to keep the nation prospering and operating a full capacity. The US has been experiencing an increasing amount of illegal immigration over the last decade and a change in policy needs to happen in order to address this increase.

Some of the key steps I would implement would be establishing amnesty for some current illegal immigrants, providing better social services, improving boarder safety and decreasing

corruption, and supporting farmers who need temporary workers at specific times of the growing process. The current policy of the Bush administration fails to support the economy because by limiting immigration, there is vast worker shortage especially in the unskilled labor sector. There are many jobs Americans do not want or the supply of workers does not match the demand and immigration would close that gap. The current immigrants should not be forced back to their native country and instead they should contribute to the American society by paying taxes and spending well over the majority of their earning in the American economy.
