Only formal examinaitions, written or practical, can give a clear picture of students’ true knowledge and ability at university level. Continuous assessment like course work and projects are poor meansures of student ability.

How far do u agree with this latter statement?

In some modern education systems, there are different ways to test students. Some people argue that only formal examinations can bring true result about students’ ability whereas others prefer projects or course work. I am convinced of the latter opinion because it can show wide knowledge and soft skills that university students should have.

It is no doubt that written tests have been used in almost all universities and still offer positive results. Students have to do test by themselves without help from friends or textbook. Therefore, results are not copy from sources such as the internet, and more importantly, it can show what they understand. Although some people claim that due to pressure under examination period, many students do not perform as well as expected, written tests are still the most popular way to judge academic knowledge of students.

Continuous assessment, on the other hand, can be seen as a modern way to test students’ ability. First, course work or projects often require students practical knowledge rather than theory. By finding up-to-date information and representing them, these students can improve considerably background knowledge. Second, assessment can be seen as a chance to test soft skills such as group working, computer skills or time management.

In my opinion, students’ knowledge have been better shown in course work. A university degree should be based on combination of both academic achievement and other practical skills.

In conclusion, each type of university examinations has its own positive and negative sides. What should be considered which type of examination is used in the right case.
