PERSONAL EFFICACY AND LEADERSHIP

1. Does my leadership style reflect who I am or have I been imitating the behavior of someone else?

I believe that to be an effective leader, leadership style must be built up from an individual’s own qualities and traits, strengthening what one is already good at but not really doing away with learning from other’s strengths as well. In essence, my leadership style reflects who I am because it means delivering my forte, and demonstrates my preferences and expectations. Before, I am made to think that I need to parallel those great leaders or the former leaders or the rest of the leaders that I share the same task at the least, in order to be able to qualify as a good leader. That was difficult for me, trying to be someone I am not. Until someone took time to give me a piece of advice telling me that really won’t work. Rather, I must be able to realize what aspects of a leader I am already good at and build on that further, and then look at how other leaders’ style with those I am basically weak at, and learn and apply them. Thus, leadership style is not purely constrained to self but definitely not mimicry. In the first place a leader is not stereotyped.

3. What kind of leader inspired me to do my best work? What can I do to grow toward being that type of leader?

I believe that the persons who have made the greatest influence in my life are my family, especially my parents, so that I look up to them as my role models even as a leader. Ever since, I have seen them lead with integrity, honesty, justice and most importantly, others-oriented. I am inspired by their work to think not about what I can get out of life, but to consume my life for others. Before, my thoughts and motivation for leading, even for serving was for recognition. But through them, I realized that it’s not how much I get for myself from my work, but how much I give of myself for others. Therefore, what I need to do is to see to it that in all my work, I...
