EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to determine discuss situations where statistics have been used to benefit in the creation of positive social change.
Recommendations
Bluman, defines statistics as the science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize, analyze and draw conclusions from data (Bluman p. 3). Because it’s not possible to survey the entire population statisticians use sampling as a means of obtaining the opinions of a particular group of subjects. Personally, I”ve never been used in a survey that to my knowledge has been used in documented studies and I’ve often wondered how the subjects are chosen. However, I have participated in paid focus group studies and the paid in box surveys online. I’ve discovered that I’m a passionate people person; I have a genuine concern about man-kind and the current state of America. Therefore, for this particular class project I choose topics that are of personal concern to me and the future well-being of my sons. My topics are (1) HIV & Aids (2) African-American Adoptions. While the purpose of my paper isn’t to be racially prejudice, I choose topics that were of relevant concern to me personally.
Main Conclusion
Statistics is often referred to as the science that of learning from data. The American Heritage Dictionary defines statistics as: "The mathematics of the collection, organization, and interpretation of numerical data, especially the analysis of population characteristics by inference from sampling."
