Drinking Age should be lowered to 18.

A person in the U.S becomes legally an adult at the age of 18 but not yet legal enough to drink. Alcohol which is a major issue among teenagers and as well as college students causing them to risk their lives at edge sometimes by drinking and driving, drinking under peer pressure, at college dorms and in public through fake identities. These risks are taken more by people who are under 21 rather than the legal drinking age people. It causes the under the age of 21 students/ teenagers to drink in an irresponsible manner and also affects their lives in a disturbing way. To avoid these dangers amongst the under 21 age group the government should allow the drinking of alcohol at age 18, because if people can go to war when their 18, they should be allowed to drink.

An 18-year-old in the United States is old enough to join the military, have his/her right to vote, sign private contracts, get married, buy cigarettes and however not old enough to buy and consume alcohol (Quitschau). As the above rights are a part of life and gradually come along as a person becomes an adult, so does the need for proving a person is an adult by drinking. To most of the teenagers, drinking is a very important sign of being an adult. They tend to have a mindset that by drinking they will be an adult now and no longer be treated with supervision. According to Michael clay smith, “It is blatantly inconsistent to forbid them to drink. Many of them view the setting of the drinking age at 21 as hypocritical.” (Drinking Age Should Be Lowered to 18). It concludes to a decision that as a responsible adult, those who age 18-21 should be given the responsibility to make their decisions for themselves. Hence, proving that an 18 year old is an adult and should be treated as one (Quitschau).
