Environmental concerns of removing and disposing old hardware

First of all, let’s look at what is actually considered “waste” when it comes to computers. E-waste as it is called, consists of old computer hardware and all its parts, defective electronic equipment including cell phones and personal computers, laptops, televisions, and things of the like.

Since technology is changing ever so rapidly compared to previous times, the turnover rates for electronic devices especially computers is high. Not to mention how much electronics have gotten cheaper over time.

The problem: -

If electronics are not disposed of properly, the probability of causing environmental hazards are high. Among the many substances found in E-waste are dioxins, PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyls), chromium, copper, zinc, radioactive isotopes, and mercury. The circuit board especially, contains a large quantity of lead that can cause pollution and leak into the ground if not properly taken care of.

Lead – If inhaled or ingested, lead is a pollutant that can injure the nervous system. Children are especially at risk of hearing and development problems.

Cadmium – used mainly for coating purposes especially in batteries, cadmium ca affect bones, the liver and kidneys.

Mercury – one of the most dangerous substances affects the nervous system especially in children and birth defects in the unborn. Excess inhalation can cause death in extreme cases.

Chromium – can damage the lungs, throat and nose and has been proven to cause lung cancer.

Polyvinyl chlorides – is a carcinogen and increases your risk of developing cancer.

What companies can do:

* Reuse or donate – donating to charities and schools can extend the life of electronics. There are some organizations out there that will buy your equipment for a small sum.

* Recycle – recycling old electronics can help recycle reuse valuable elements and substances suitable for reclamation, including lead, copper, and gold.

* Purchase...
